ONE, Inc., was one of the first gay rights organizations in the United States. It was founded in Los Angeles in with money and leadership from U.S. groups like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis, as well as Swiss magazine Der Kreis. Lerner and Stephen Reis have made a transformative gift of $ million to ONE Archives at the USC Libraries (ONE) to name and endow the ONE Archives director position. One became the first gay organization in the United States to open a public office (in Downtown Los Angeles), and as such its offices acted as a prototype LGBT community center.
